Some things are still in storage and I'm in major need of organization! Where's Oprah and her team organization experts, or maybe Martha would be a better choice since we're both crafty (=messy). This monthwe will be featuring a solo art installation from EKUNDAYO of the Ground Up Pirates collective. He will be unveiling new art pieces for his Honolulu art show at Exclusive. Ekundayo will also be doing live painting at the show. The art installation will be on display through February 1, 2009.

Ekundayo (Dayo) was born in Honolulu, Hi, in 1983 where he lived with his mother and father until the age of five when his mother and father could no longer get along. Ekundayo's father snuck him out of the state without his mother’s knowledge, and for seven years Ekundayo and his father moved from place to place living a life on the run. Meanwhile in her desperate need to find her son, Ekundayo's mother helped start Hawaii's first clearing house for missing children. The life on the run ended in 1994 when his father moved to California with Ekundayo's sister because his father was dying from cancer. In early 1995, Ekundayo's father passed away from lung cancer; Ekundayo was eleven…

Ekundayo lived with his sister, brother in-law, four nieces and his sister’s mother in a small three-bedroom and one-bath house in Pacoima, Ca. It was in this house at the age of 13 that Ekundayo discovered his love for art. After being involved in school fights, stealing and hanging with the wrong people, he was suspended from school. One day while in the
garage, he found one of his uncle's black books. This uncle wrote for a graff crew in L.A. called C.H.B. This book completely changed Ekundayo’s life. He became obsessed with drawing and copied every single page in that little book. Meanwhile, the Dept of Justice had located Ekundayo at his sister's home and returned him to the custody of his mother. Ekundayo went back to Hawaii to live with his mother. His drive to create didn't stop, and the encouragement from his family only fueled that ambition. Shortly after graduating high-school, Ekundayo moved back with his sister and brother in-law in much more spacious accommodations. He attended Pierce College in Winetka, Ca, where he
practiced his craft and worked on his portfolio until 2003 when he was accepted into Art Center College of Art and Design on a scholarship.
Although the teachers he studied under and the friends he met while going to Art Center were priceless to his development, Ekundayo dropped out after completing his foundation courses in order to create his own path in the fine art world. He combines both subversive graffiti aesthetics in combination with art-historical erudition using acrylic, gouache, watercolor, ink and various carving techniques. Ekundayo's work expresses the struggle of life and how those struggles and burdens can either inspire us to change in a constructive way or weigh us down by our own inability to change.

The night started off real chill, with music by DJ OBSERVE and KTC. The shirts were hung on the walls in place of art work, and part of exclusive was painted green to prep for PEEKABOO Monster and his solo art show coming this Thursday Night. Peeps rolled through to cop the tees to support. Get yours while you can, the lightsleepers pop-up shop is available this month only in Exclusive.
For those that keep asking what is Lightsleepers? Here's a brief bio from their website:

The Lightsleepers is Hawaii Hip-Hop roots, culture, life, curating, all day - erryday.

Founded in 1997 as a radio show on KTUH 90.3fm called, “The Lightsleepers”. The show was birthed and hosted by Kavet the catalyst. Before the show went off the air in 2001, the accomplishments the show achieved was never done in Hawaii. Listeners from all over the world tuned in to a Hawaii Hip-Hop show. Artists would make it a point to stop in to the show, such as Aceyalone, Jeru the Damaja, Q-Bert, Shortcut, PEACE, Myka9, Radioinactive, Peanutbutterwolf, Sole, Dose, 2Mex, Visionaries, Busdriver, and countless others. Also in that time period the “LS” were able to release 2 tapes and 1 CD, “Narcoleptic Symposium” - a compilation of Hawaii artists as well as artist that stopped into the show to freestyle, “Juxtaprose” - Kavet the catalyst’s first solo tape, and “Narcoleptic Symposium 1.5 Ana Love Digi” - the 2nd compilation from Hawaii.

Non-stop love for Hip-Hop, the Lightsleepers continue to drop gems, jewels, and diamonds. Growing out of the soils of the radio show we have been releasing Music from Nomasterbacks, Wade, Earthmovers, Jus1oh, Dj Observ, and ktc, with much more to come. Doing on-going events/shows such as Trip the lights, Beatroot, Inertia, Heartists, Hip-Hop Cinema, Games of S-K-A-T-E, and 2H 2F. Overall, spreading the love for God through example and action, by teaching, educating, and believing in the youth.

Aloha! Thanks to my sister-in-law I found a new dope nail salon, T&D Nails & Spa! They are brand spankin' new only 4 months old, owned by husband Henry and wife Tina. But let me tell you, this salon is brand new and it looks very boutiqueish but the prices are AMAZINGLY REASONABLE! Henry tells me they are all about PAMPERING, yup they are, all Pedicures are minimum 45 minutes or more! Yes it was soooooo relaxing! I got the Deluxe Classic Pedicure which comes with a Paraffin Treatment for only $32! Another great thing is that they only hire those with 10 years or more experience!! Yes, now we can have some peace of mind. Oh-wait forgot to tell you they offer group specials: 4-6 people: 10% off for the full service. My girls and I already planned our next trip to T&D, located in Aiea across from Circuit City, next to 7-Eleven call them for more info: 808.486.8822.

The usual suspects will be in attendance, with the expansive groundUP roster of artists: painters, illustrators, photographers, models, fashion designers, musicians, producers, DJs, and poets, providing aural and visual stimulation.

To try and list everyone on the flyer would be silly, so just read the flyer and check out al the dopeness that’s gonna be produced during the event.

One important thing to note is that there wil be new groundUP t-shirts available, so make sure you get up on it and score yourself a piece of the biggest collective of artists in Hawaii.

Noa is the mastermind behind everything groundUP and, thanks to his tireless efforts, this one promises to be another epic show and another arrow in the ever-growing quivver of amazing groundUP art shows.

BOUND FOR GREATNESS is set to go down this Saturday night at the Honolulu Design Center. $7 gets you through the door, $5 if you wear a skirt, collared shirt or groundUP shirt. This all ages event starts at 8pm and is slated to go until midnight. Free parking is available in the Honolulu Design Center.
